I've been a writer since I knew how to spell (and probably even before that!). The first short story I remember writing was when I was around eight years old, which was a tale about a young girl who found a leaf from a magic tree that could stop time. Even as a child I KNEW there was magic in nature the adults were missing!

Since then I've written various poems and short stories, been commissioned to write several plays, as well be lucky enough to have my short film Last Orders win awards at local and national film festivals.

Yet the greatest thing writing has brought into my life is the discovery and expression of my true voice.

As someone who's struggled with verbal expression due to shyness and growing up experiencing mental health challenges, speech wasn't always a form of communication through which I could express easily. Give me a pen and paper, however, and all that self-consciousness would vanish as I allowed the the limitless world of my imagination and love for word-play fall out onto the page.

Writing was, and is, my safe space, and has got me through some difficult times. During mental and physical health conditions, writing has been a powerful reminder that I am so much more than the limiting beliefs and labels that can weigh heavy on the mind.

And it is this I hope to offer to others through Write to Be, a writing group for anyone wanting to connect with their creative voice, imagination, and love of words.

We meet once a month in a relaxed, open space to write, share (if you’d like), and connect with others through creativity.

Each session includes:

  • A gentle check-in and short grounding meditation

  • A  word game to get our imaginations flowing

  • A reflective writing prompt

  • Optional sharing in a friendly, no-pressure circle

You don’t need any writing experience, and there’s no critique. Come along to simply enjoy the process, discover your creative voice, and be part of a community.
